Snow Cream

The other day when it wouldn't stop snowing, I had to indulge in a bowl of snow cream. I used what I had on hand. And since it was just for me, here's my snow cream recipe for one.

2 cups of fresh clean snow
A sprinkle of salt
1/4 cup vanilla almond milk
1/2 teaspoon of sugar

Just mix and enjoy while curled up under a warm fluffy blanket!

Snow Day

This week, we had our first snow of the season. I couldn't believe we finally had snow. It wasn't a ton, but some is better than none!

Hawthorne Hotel - Salem, MA

While visiting Salem, MA last month, we stayed at the Hawthorne Hotel.

This is a historic hotel that has been opened since 1925.  There are some rumors that it's haunted, but we never experienced anything.  The old world charm spills out into every area of the hotel.  It transports you back to that time period and you can't help but imagine just how grand it was.  And I really shouldn't say was....it still is!

For a someone looking for upscale modern acomodations, this isn't the hotel for you.  But if you like the old vintage charm, this hotel is for perfect for you!

There's something extra special when you can take an old building and make certain things new without compromising the charm of how it was built.

From what I've read, it seems as if every room is a little different than the next room.  You never know what you're going to get.  But that can also add to the excitement of it!

We arrived in the very early morning hours and were greeted by very nice and welcoming staff.  We  came in a night early and they were able to move us to a room that we could stay in all 3 nights.

The lobby was like going back in time.  Very quaint with their Christmas decorations still up!

There are only 2 elevators in the hotel.  And right between them is an old time mail box.  You can put the mail in on any floor and it slides on down!

We were on the 2nd floor and there were very few rooms.  There were several meeting rooms, offices and a way to look out over the ballroom.  The area that looked over the ballroom was filled with flowers and kinda reminded me of a funeral home.

The hallways were large and full of old world charm.  Gold chandeliers, crown molding.

Our room was 202.  And we had this plaque beside it.  All of the rooms on the 2nd floor has a different one.  We didn't explore any of the other floors, so I'm not sure that this was on every room.

Once inside the room, we were met with unique room setting.  But it was perfect!

The bed was in a little cozy spot away from the door.  It was easy to forget this was a hotel!

The bed was comfortable.  The pillows were just perfect.  Not too hard and not too soft.

The wall beside the bed had two doors that were a wide closet and a single door which was the bathroom.  We were a little nervous about the size of the bathroom.  It was tiny, but it ended up being all we needed.  After a day, we really didn't even think about it being small.

All the door knobs reminded you that you were in an older place.

The bathroom had been redone, but in a perfect way that is still kept with the age of the hotel.

Overall, the Hawthorne Hotel met and exceeded my expectations.

Cleanliness
Everything was clean.  I tried to find things that weren't clean and I couldn't.

Friendliness of Staff
Every person I encountered was extremely nice.  Yes, it's considered a more upscale hotel and you would expect the staff to be friendly, but they exceeded my expectations.

Worth the Money
This hotel was actually very affordable.  But we were there during the slow time of the year.  It was worth every penny!

Size of Room
Overall the room was spacious.  There were certain areas, like the bathroom, that were small.

Near Sights
Yes.  It's located in the middle of town where you can walk to most everything.

Would You Stay Here Again?
Yes!!!  I'm trying to find a good reason to visit Salem again just to stay at the Hawthorne Hotel!

Salem, MA

Thankfully I had extra vacation days left at the end of the year and could take off some time after Christmas.  This may be my new favorite time to travel.  Christmas is over, but it's still decorated.  And not a lot of people go on vacations this time of year.

This was my first trip to the New England area.  I'm sure it won't be my last.

If I could only use one word to describe my feeling of Salem, it would be peaceful.

I think I found my happy place!
